?weed? ID #245176

Asked May 17, 2015, 9:43 PM EDT

Need help in id'ing the pic of weed below. It is quite prolific in the spring and thrives in bad soil. Mature leaf is soft and a bit fuzzy. Have used preem which holds it down after I've handpicked zillions of 1/2 in starts. Attached 3 variable sizes, assuming they are the same plant. Thanks for your efforts

Expert Response

Does the plant in the pictures grow as a vine? The left picture appears as such. If yes, the leaf structure looks like Old Man's Beard: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/bes/article/172621
Is that what you are seeing?  In terms of control, preen is a weed preventer (pre-emergent herbicide) and will not control existing plants.  Post -emergent herbicides will control plants that have already emerged.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Weston, it definitely is not a vine.  Note the 'fringed' leaf edge unlike the Old man beard.  That big guy that you thought might be a be vine, was a sturdy upright that just got away from me.  Normally I am pulling them out at 1/2 inch size  but they are everywhere, rock paths, bark dust, flower beds...and I hate to use poison.    Thank you and have a great Memorial Weekend.

Hello,

Another expert helped to identify this plant as birch seedlings.  If you aggressively pull them out, you can likely avoid the use of herbicide.  Sorry for the delay in my response.

Good luck.

Thanks so much.  Birch fits and seedlings will continue tobe a back bending maddening choir.   Appreciate the info.
