Toba Hawthorne #245022

Asked May 17, 2015, 1:32 PM EDT

My friend asked you a question about my Toba Hawthorne trees. The trees are approximately 18-20 years old and the ends of the branches are going brown (appear to be dying). I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada. Here is your response to his email - It would be very helpful if you could send a close up digital photo of the damage. Are there any new buds opening below the dead areas? Where do you live, and how long have you had the tree? While the tree is said to be extremely cold-hardy, it may have suffered winterburn on the newer growth if it is still young or was planted last year. I have enclosed pictures.

Expert Response

Dear gardener,

The browning appears to be on old foliage from a previous season. It is very difficult to tell from the photos weather there is any new growth on those branches. If the branches are indeed dead, they should be pruned out. Since these trees look to be a fairly good size, it would probably be best to consult with a certified arborist who would be in a better position to identify the cause, as well as remove the branches. You can find a list of arborists at http://www.isaprairie.com/.
