Our Poor Hollies #244996

Asked May 17, 2015, 11:57 AM EDT

We have about 8 large American hollies, of which 4 or 5 are very sick. They are losing leaves and their branches look bad. These hollies are about 30 years old and quite tall. They are planted in sandy soil (dredge from the creek). They are about 8' above MLW. Can we save them??? Spray? Trim damaged parts? Feed? ???

Expert Response

From your photos we cannot identify the decline on the hollies. You may be dealing with some type of root problem, compaction, drought, etc. In general hollies are dropping their old foliage and new growth is emerging.
Dead wood can be pruned out any time. Scratch the branches with your fingernail and look for green tissue. If you see, it the branch is viable.
If the trees are important to you, consider contacting several certified arborists regarding the health of the trees and the best way to proceed. http://www.treesaregood.org/
