Asked May 15, 2015, 1:47 PM EDT

I am the FCS Agent. I received a call today asking for chemical recommendation --on how to get rid of "cadillos" on the lawn without killing the buffelgrass and Bermuda grass. Thank you.

Hello,

All you need here is some consistent general maintenance.

Meaning, mow often with a well-maintained mower.

If you all have been getting plenty of rain this spring, this means instead of every five days to possibly every three days.

Water effectively and efficiently during times of drought.

Fertilize in mid-April with 7 pounds of 19-5-9 per 1000 square feet.

Fertilize in early June with 10 pounds of Hi-Yield Iron-plus per 1000 square feet.

Fertilize in mid-October with 5 pounds of 18-6-12 per 1000 square feet.

Over seed the buffalo portion of the lawn with 'Sahara' or 'Black Jack' Bermuda at a rate of one pound per 400 square feet.

Most people give up with Buffalo grass over a short period of time due to weed pressure.

Consider applying Ferti-lome Weed-Out- with-Q or an Image product that lists this weed.  Always read and follow label instructions.

Apply XL-2G pre-emergent granules in late February and again in late August for two years.  Always read and follow label instructions.

Keep parameters mowed down as not to let these or other weeds flower and distribute seed.

Good luck!

Client provided clarification on the actual land area he is trying to treat. The land is a 10 acre trac of land in Zapata, TX. (Zapata County) - There is no AG/NR Agent there at this time. He stated that the thorns are finding way to his ranch land as it is flying into his land area. He stated that he does not mow as the livestock eats off the land. He stated he is just having an overwhelming problems with the thorn seedlings reproducing on the land. He has Buffelgrass and Bermuda. Thank you.

Hello,

The guidelines would be the same for large acreage.

-Mow and mow often.  DO NOT let these weeds flower and set seed.

-Keep perimeters mowed often.

-Increase the rates of nutrition, particularly nitrogen.  A well fed pasture will help grow the native grasses and forages of choice, this will help choke out most weed pressure over time.

-Follow the same herbicide recommendations as above.
