Asked May 09, 2015, 10:08 AM EDT

This vine is growing profusely in my yard. I live in Lago Vista, TX. What is it and how do I get rid of it without using pesticides?

Travis County Texas

Expert Response

This appears to be a variety of Ampelopsis--it's in the grape family. THis one is, I think, Porcelainberry (Ampelopsis brevipedunculata). http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/pubs/midatlantic/ambr.htm  Its distribution does not include TX, but it's on the Texas Forest Service  list of Unwanted Alien Plants on the Door Step of Texas (http://www.guynesom.com/LISTS-Texasinvasivesweb.htm) and is considered a non-native noxious plants threatening to invade Texas.  Do not let this plant grow.  Birds are attracted to the berries, and will spread the seeds far and wide!

According to the nps.gov website: "Prevention and Control
Do not plant porcelainberry. Birds are attracted to the fruits and will easily spread it far and wide. Once established it can be difficult to control due to the vigorous root system. Pull young vines up by hand anytime and try to remove the rootstock. Apply systemic herbicides like glyphosate ( e.g., Roundup) and triclopyr (E.g., Garlon and Release) to cut stems or leaves to kill entire plants including the roots."
I suggest you contact  your Travis County Master Gardeners with this information.
