Rabbit Damage #242336
Asked May 06, 2015, 10:10 PM EDT
I have several shrubs that rabbits lunched on during the winter. The bark is chewed of all the way around the branches. Can they be saved or do I need to prune? The picture attached is of a Burning Bush. Thank you for your help. Debbie Sharp Mecosta

Unfortunately once bark is chewed through, these limbs will not survive. You should prune below the damaged areas (if possible) and your burning bush will send out new shoots. It may take a couple of years to regrow back to the original size but if healthy, it will survive. Protecting the shrub with chicken wire or another barrier method may help in the future but snow depth and winter severity will determine what the rabbits snack on. Hope that helps!
