Something is eating the leaves on my climbing rose #242028

Asked May 05, 2015, 9:57 PM EDT

For the last several years, in late spring and summer, something has been eating all of the leaves off my climbing rose. This year it has started already, perhaps because of the warmer spring we have had. There are no leaves on the ground, so the leaves are not simply falling off. I don't see anything crawling on the stems during the daylight. I also have some black spot which I need to treat for, but If I don't get rid of whatever is eating all of the leaves, there won't be any black spot left to spray. Ideas, or questions that I need to answer?

Here is a link for an Oregon State University publication called Controlling Diseases and Aphids on your Roses: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/pdf/ec/ec1520.pdf It has color pictures and some very good advice on controlling various afflictions of roses, including black spot. The sulfur sprays such as those offered by the Safer brand (other brands are also available) are fairly effective against black spot. The publication also mentions dormant sprays, similar to the ones you would use on a fruit tree. Rather than give up, consider giving these treatments a try.  Hopefully this will get you started in the right direction.
