My honeycrisp tree died last year from some sort of disease (see photo). How long, before I can plant in that area again? Is there something that I need to do to the soil?

Can you tell me about more about what the leaves looked like? Did the tree get cracking bark? Did the ends of the branches become curled like shepherd's crooks? I am trying to figure out if it had fire blight or something else.
