The seedling plants in the photo may be linden seedlings. 

Repeated mowing of the lawn will eventually kill the seedlings in the lawn. 

Seedlings in flower beds will need to be destroyed by pulling or digging.

Our Linden is over 25 years old. This is the first year we have seen this "tree" come up in the lawn or the flower beds. WHY now?

I don't think it is a Linden seedling. Check out the photo I took this morning.

Lindens (like most trees) periodically produce heavy seed crops.  Apparently, the linden tree produced a heavy seed crop last year or the year before.
