white cottony cocoon like things in fruit tree #239982

Asked April 27, 2015, 5:26 PM EDT

I do not know much about this tree but it is some kind of cherry tree, with cherries that are not eaten by people. It has pink flowers and these white rather large cottony cocoon like things with bugs crawling on them. What are these and what should be done to control them so the tree will live and be well. And are these bugs etc..., at all dangerous in any other ways? Thank you so very much.

Expert Response

From your description .it appears that you have the eastern tent caterpillar. Black cherry is one of its most common hosts. Although they are capable of defoliating the tree of its leaves, cherry trees will produce a second set of leaves. If the tent is reachable,it can be broken up using a long stick, predator insects and birds will feed on the larvae, thus providing a natural control. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/eastern-tent-caterpillar-trees
