What is causing our periwinkle plants to die? #239473

Asked April 25, 2015, 11:30 AM EDT

These periwinkles have been here since we built our house in the '70s. They were already on the wooded piece of our property. They've always been "iron" plants. Nothing has ever effected them. But this spring they are dying from a thick brown "fungus" coating their leaves. What is it and what can we do about it. Thanks

This looks like a rust fungus in a fairly advanced state. I have rarely seen it and vinca has generally been more the plant you can't get rid of (when you want to ) than a plant that has many ailments. That said, here is the de4scripotion of the disease from our PNW Plant Disease Handbook: http://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/vinca-spp-periwinkle-rust . The fungicides listed aren't available to homeowners so sanitation is probably the best bet, I doubt it would kill the plant. Chip
