Mexican Palm Leaves Turning Yellow #238449

Asked April 20, 2015, 7:00 PM EDT

Hi - my husband and I planted 3 large Mexican palms in the ground in February.  We have been watering them once a week since planted.  The leaves on one of the palms are turning yellow.  This palm has 3 separate trunks.  Can you tell me what might be the problem - too much water, too little water, too much recent sun?  The palms are about 7 feet high.

Thanks, Jane Botchie

Expert Response

Hi,

It could be a potassium deficiency but it is hard to tell from the photo.  Are you fertilizing them?

Hi Peter - No, we have not fertilized it.  What type of fertilizer do you recommend?  If it would help, I can send you a close-up photo of the yellow leaves for a better view.  Would a close-up photo be beneficial to you?

Thanks,
Jane.

Hi Jane,

A closeup photo would be helpful.

Peter - Per your request, I'm attaching two close-up photos of our yellowing palm.  I'm from Ohio and the leaves look like corn stalks at the end of the summer season, if that helps any.  If you need any further information, let me know.

Hi,

I am afraid that doesn't help.  If you can bring in a fan that still has some green on it like the one in the photo we might be able to see something going on.  From this perspective it looks like environmental stress that may include transplant shock.  Continue the the TLC and let me know if it seems to be getting worse.

Peter - thank you!  What are the days and hours of operation for us to bring in a fan?
