Asked April 19, 2015, 6:14 PM EDT

I have a pecan tree that I bought from a nursery ten years agowhich was 12' to 14'. Now it is around 20' There is moss growing on the trunk and has started spreading to them branches. Does this need to be treated or left alone? If treated what should be used.

Expert Response

The moss that you describe are called Lichen. Below is a link to talk or explain the relationship with the tree. In general the lichen being present on the tree is not enough to be concerned if the tree seems to be in good health. The lichen can be an indicator that there is something else wrong with the tree. A good place to start is a soil test to see what could be wrong with your tree.
