beetle type insects in fireplace chimney #238015

Asked April 19, 2015, 10:38 AM EDT

Every spring these little beetle like bugs come out of our fireplace chimney. If we get a chilly night and start a fire it doesn't matter. The bugs reappear the next day. I don't understand how they can pop right back out after having been exposed to the fire the night before. I've tried finding them in insect books without any luck.

Expert Response

From the photo that you sent we could not accurately identify the insects. A possibility may be a type of leaf beetle, such as the elm leaf beetle.
It is recommended to prevent them from coming in.  Try putting a 1/8 inch fine wire mesh screening  around your chimney cap  to keep them out.  Also, caulk all cracks, crevices, and holes to keep them out.
