Is this a carpenter ant? #237798

Asked April 17, 2015, 10:59 PM EDT

Hi Everyone! I have a few dozen ants in my sunroom that are huge, winged and slowly crawling around and dying. They're hanging around an old wooden table and chairs and I'm trying to figure out if they're carpenter ants and the best way to deal with them. I've attached pictures. If there are less toxic ways to deal, I'd love to hear suggestions! Any insights are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Carpenter ants---- Hello, Your photo could be carpenter ants. That doesn't mean they have a nest in your home. In spring ants move around looking for new nest sites, and looking for food. Different ants need different controls. So first, positively identify the ant--- get a magnifying glass and compare your ant to ID Pictures in the article I have linked below --- --- Here is a link to a carpenter ant article that has ID, and control options --- http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/insects/find/carpenter-ants/ --- --- If you still can't ID the ant, you may send a sample to MSU's pestid lab --- see http://www.pestid.msu.edu for instructions on how to send a sample. If you do send a sample, mail it early in the week so it arrives on a weekday. --- Thank you for using our service.
Thank you! It does seem like a carpenter ant to me, but we may still mail in the sample to be sure.

Thanks, again, for the information!
