A student of mine brought this to our second grade class and we are wondering if this is a fossil or not.

This does not look typical of a fossil. It appears to be more like tannin or lignin staining from plant material as it is more a dark brown stain and nothing raised or indented in the rock. If you look closely, you can still see pieces of what looks like plant material stuck to the rock in the same pattern. Interesting piece!
