Asked April 13, 2015, 1:01 PM EDT

Dear Garden experts,

I moved in last summer to a house where has some grape vines in the back yard. The plant is start growing rapidly but I found there is quite a part of the vines and leaves having some sort of burning black spots, even on the baby grape fruits. I would like to know what is that could be and what would be the solutions.

Your prompt response shall be highly appreciated, as they are growing fast!

Thank you!

Expert Response

There are several diseases that can plague grape vines. As I look at the pictures, I believe that you are dealing with Phomopsis Cane and Leaf Spot. You can find more information about this grape disease as well as possible chemical control measures at https://winegrapes.tamu.edu/grow/phomopsis.html.

I am looking for organic control if it is possible. What is your suggestion?

It keeps raining these days that doesn't help! :(

Sulfur or copper based products might give you decent control.  I do not know if neem oil would be effective or not.   When pruning, remove the infected canes and destroy by burning.
