brown spots on my holly tree leaves #234872

Asked April 05, 2015, 12:00 PM EDT

This tree is about 3 years old . I noticed some brown spots on it about a week ago . Now some of them have turned white and have holes in them . This is the first time I have seen this on the tree . I looked under the leaves like you told me to on my roses , but did not see any bugs .

Expert Response

The foliage of the holly tree shows winter damage. In many cases winter damage occurs during the winter months but symptoms appear in the spring as the plant begins to emerge from the winter dormant period and move into the spring growth phase. It is normal for hollies to shed their one year old leaves in the spring about the time the new growth is forming. Leaves may be yellow and have some fungal spots. Wait to see if the new growth is looking good to determine if any other action is needed.
