mimosa pudica or mimosa strigillosa #232877

Asked March 25, 2015, 2:53 PM EDT

Hello. Can you pls help advise how I can tell the difference between the two? I am in south Florida and would rather plant the native one (strigillosa). I saw a sensitive plant at my local nursery that the worker assured me was pudica but had no thorns. I thought all pudica had thorns. I liked this one vs the strigillosa a bit more because it moved much faster than the strigillosa I purchased at another nursery. I don't want it if it has thorns though..could it be the worker was mistaken and it is actually strigillosa?

Expert Response

Very young M. pudica ("sensitive") plants may not have thorns, but other than that, yes - M. pudica will have thorns. The movement is apparently more noticeable on them than the Florida native M. strigillosa ("Sunshine" or "powderpuff"). M. pudica does not form a mat-like groundcover like M. strigillosa does, and instead grows more shrublike, although it will not form a dense shrub appearance. It's usually grown as an indoors container plant for curiosity value, but has been found growing in weedy areas in the Gulf states. M. strigillosa spreads out in a mat; it will not grow "up".
