Live Oak trunk damage #231949

Asked March 20, 2015, 10:09 AM EDT

I was hoping someone could tell me based on pictures of damage to the trunk of one of my live oak trees whether I have problem with an oak borer or other insect or whether a woodpecker is the cause?

Expert Response

HI

BASED ON YOUR PICTURES I WOULD HAVE TO ADVISE YOU IT IS A BIRD OF SOME KIND.  BORER DAMAGE TENDS TO LOOK LIKE A SHOTGUN BLAST VERY RANDOM WHERE BIRDS TEND TO BE A PATTERN STRAIGHT ACROSS LIKE WHAT YOU HAVE??
