mountain laurel #228642

Asked February 23, 2015, 1:33 PM EST

I'm not sure I'm emailing the correct people but I need help with a mature mountain laurel.  The tree was here when we moved in 6 years ago so I know it's that old at least.  I just noticed that the trunk has is splitting in half and I have no idea how to save it.  Any help?

Expert Response

Any number of factors could have caused the branch on the mountain laurel to split.  I would suggest that you prune off the branch that is splitting away.  As a good pruning technique, spray pruning paint over the fresh wound within 30 minutes of the cut.  Trying to support the split trunk with boards or other support device will not fix the problem.
