My tree is over grown and has been flowering. Is it okay to prune some of the lower and internal branches off of it without hurting the tree?

My tree is over grown and has been flowering. Is it okay to prune some of the lower and internal branches off of it without hurting the tree?

Typically, late winter/spring bloomers are pruned AFTER the trees/bushes are done blooming. They can be pruned now but pruning would reduce the bloom.
Prune out some of the oldest wood, This will also reduce the height. Try to prune or remove less than 30% of the tree/bush.
Typically the more new growth, the more flowers next year.
