Our Magnolia tree seems to be confused and has put out buds in Feb.!( It stands atop a West facing berm.) Last year it only produced 1 flower so this premature budding may have occurred before but went unnoticed. What causes this to happen and is there anything we can do to help the tree now or prevent it from happening again? Thanks, Judy Lester, Arden Hills

Expert Response
The premature bud development you have noted sometimes occurs during mild winters or extended warm spells. Early blooming plants such as magnolias are most likely to be affected. Buds that have begun to expand prematurely may be lost depending upon weather conditions later this winter and early spring. So far as we know nothing can be done to prevent this.
