How can I preserve a Mang... #221214

Asked November 24, 2014, 6:17 PM EST

How can I preserve a Mango plant during the winter? It grew out so nicely, it would be a shame to lose it. The recent cold weather has left it with sagging, pale leaves. I know it takes a few years to bear fruit, but that's part of the excitement. Any way to keep the young tree through the cold months would be welcome. Thank you!

The early freeze may have already killed your mango tree. Try growing the next one in a pot and store it indoors during the winter months.

Thank you for your reply, but I wanted to know how to keep the plant alive during the winter months while keeping it outside. It would eventually outgrow a pot, requiring transplantation. At that point, no pot could house a mango tree any longer. That would require it remain in the ground outdoors permanently. Is a larger mango tree robust enough to withstand the winter months? If so, what can I do to protect it during those below freezing periods? Thank you.

This is a tropical plant. It does not have a dormant period and lose its leaves each fall like a deciduous tree such as an oak.  It will not survive in Maryland unless protected, by which we mean enclosed in a greenhouse environment.  You could build a structure around it each fall.  The structure would need a heat source.  It would also have to allow light to reach the leaves.
