New Castle County Delaware

Expert Response

From the photo you supplied, this specimen looks like a Southern Toad (Anaxyrus terrestris), but New Castle County, DE is too far north for its natural range. A male of this species can be about an inch-in-size. Was this toad found in northern Delaware? ~DOT

Being so close to the Delaware Nature Society's Ashland office (located on Brackenville Road in Hockessin ... phone #302-239-2334) you might want to take the photo over there and visit with Jim White. He is the Associate Director for Land and Biodiversity Management and teaches classes in herpetology. Jim could able to give you a more detailed ID on the specimen and some background on its habitat. Your siting may be of interest if the toad has ventured north of it's natural range. I believe Jim also documents habitat changes. ~DOT
