Can I sell my Salsa at local stores and farmer markets? #219470

Asked November 05, 2014, 11:38 AM EST

I want to sell my homemade salsa. I just took the online course for the Michigan collage law. I understand that Salsa is not on the list of an item that can be made in my own kitchen. Does this mean , I have to sell my salsa through Commercial food Regulations. Just looking for any advice .
Thank you,

Expert Response

Dear Darlene,

Sorry for the delayed response, I was attending a conference.  I am glad you have taken the  online Cottage Food Law course.

You are correct about selling the salsa under the Cottage foods it is not acceptable to sell under this law in MIchigan. I have attached two documents that come from Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development about Cottage Food law.

If you are interested in selling the salsa, I suggest you contact the MSU Product Development Center http://productcenter.msu.edu/how_the_center_can_help_you. They will assign a counselor who can work with you to explain the process involved and the commerical processing of this item for sale.

Good luck

Regards,

Eileen
