Expert Response

Odds are good that your gnats are fruit flies, but this is strictly a guess. They can breed in a drop of soda in the bottom of a soda can in your trash can. Until this problem stops, keep your trash put out multiple times a day and the trash can washed out. There are three gnat type insects that are common in homes, fruit flies, fungus gnats and drain flies. Take a look at our publication and see if you can figure out which you have. The remedies for each are in the publication. http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/non_HGIC_FS/HG26_fli...  If you can get a good clear photo of your gnat, you could send it to us for identification.
