Is this corn or a weed? #212329

Asked September 14, 2014, 10:22 AM EDT

Since I live within sight of a granary, I first thought I had corn growing in my bed of weeds but the seed head has white beads. This is the second new weed I have found this summer. The other was a creeping cucumber which wasn't unattractive but seems to be prolific.

Essex County Virginia

Expert Response

I believe it is grain Sorghum.

Thank you so much.  I have never seen this thing before and given my zone 7 temperatures--is it odd that it popped up here?

Not at all.  It's a grain crop that has a tropical origin but is grown as far north at South Dakota in the US.  Grain Sorghum production has expanded in Virginia in the last few years and it's likely that a bird managed to bring the seed to your home garden
