How far apart can plums be for pollination? #210636
Asked September 03, 2014, 11:44 PM EDT
I want to plant a plum tree, but only one. The neighbor across the street has two different plums in her front yard. Can I plant one in my front yard and it's close enough for pollination? Could I plant one in my back yard, or is that too far away from her trees?

Expert Response
Generally if plum trees are within a hundred feet the odds are pretty good of bees working both trees. Maybe more critical is whether the plum trees bloom about the same time and have viable pollen. If they do bloom at the same time, the tree in the front yard will have a good chance of being pollinated by the other if your area has bees. The backyard could be a stretch.
