Plant arrangement from flower shop #208380
Asked August 22, 2014, 9:46 PM EDT
I recently received an arrangement delivered from a flower shop. I think the one plant is a "dumb cane". If so, how worried should I be about the toxic sap?
Can you help me identify the plants in it?

Expert Response
Thank you for your question! Yes, one of your plants (the lower photo) is 'dumb cane' or dieffenbachia. The plants are toxic if ingested--so if they are not eaten it should be fine. They are a very popular houseplant. The plant with the crinkly leaves is peperomia. The third plant I am having trouble identifying. It looks as though the leaves are growing from a stalk, with opposite leaf arrangement. I will keep looking but I wanted to respond to your question about the safety of the dieffenbachia as soon as possible. You could also try calling the florist who made the arrangement.
