Patches of Dead Grass in Lawn #207661

Asked August 19, 2014, 3:27 PM EDT

A customer brought in some dead grass that has a pinkish type cast in the grass along with little moldy like pink stuff throughout the dead grass. The patches are all over in their lawn and they would like to know what it is and how to get rid of it. Could this be "Autumn Panicum"?

Three of the most common lawn diseases red thread, dollar spot, and brown patch, have been showing up in greater numbers of late. Of the three, your situation sounds like red thread, a disease usually associated with under fertilization. Here is an appropriate link to more on it:

While a writeup from 2008, it could have been written today with similar good growing conditions for much of this growing season.

Here is another on red thread:

Generally all that is needed is a fertilizer application.  Wait until the weather cools, fertilize and water it in as best as you can.  With shorter days and cooler nights ahead, your lawn should recover okay.

Good luck!
