Lawn disease or insects? #205152

Asked August 06, 2014, 7:24 PM EDT

I have attached a couple of photos of some very bad looking patches in my lawn. I have used Grub Ex and F-Stop and some other disease products but none seem to prevent increasing amounts of spots each year. They seem to emanate from the same general area. What is the problem and what can be done? I suspect Fairy Ring or Brown Spot but am not sure nor can I find any product that claims to "kill" the fungus..Help….Ken Borchert

Expert Response

Hello Mr. Borchert,

Based on the images you sent, it looks to me like Necrotic Ring Spot, a common disease of Kentucky bluegrass in Utah.  There are many cultural management practices as well as fungicides available to treat the problem, though many individuals often end up overseeding the areas with resistant varieties.

Please refer to this USU Cooperative Extension bulletin for more information on the disease and how to manage it.

Best regards.
