African Goose #203412

Asked July 30, 2014, 11:34 AM EDT

We inherited a African goose when its mate was killed by a fox and it has adopted the Canadian Geese. However they will be leaving soon and we are not sure of the sex of the African. Is there a visible difference? he has a huge knot. we have looked into getting him a friend if we know which to get. Please HELP!

Expert Response

Examine the appearance and size of your goose. Adult African ganders weigh about 20 lb. A gander will be taller than a female goose, and will have a larger knob above his bill. An adult African female goose weighs about 18 lb. An older female may also have noticeable paunch or pot-bellied appearance.

While you do not have another to compare to,males have higher-pitched voices than females. Males tend to be quite vocal and louder than females.
Meanwhile, females are not nearly as musical as males and have a lower-pitched and monotone voice. They make a sound that is often referred to as an "oink." If you pinch your nose and say "Oink" in a low voice, you'll get the idea.
Hope this helps,
