There are many insects that resemble a grasshopper but are brownish in color and they hang around shrubbery. If I brush against the shrubs, they fly up in the air. They do not seem to bite, and I repeat, they remind me of a grasshopper but are the wrong color.

Not all grasshopper's are green. It could very well have been a brown grasshopper or locust of some kind. Here are some links to look at and compare to yours. http://www.insectidentification.org/insect-description.asp?identification=Differential-Grasshopper. http://www.insectidentification.org/insect-description.asp?identification=Red-Legged-Grasshopper. http://www.insectidentification.org/insect-description.asp?identification=Carolina-Locust
Since my original question, I have looked closely and I believe they are dragon flies (no jumping). There are lots of them in my dense shrubbery. I am unable to upload a photo, but thank you for the reference sites.
Dragonflies are good friends to have around, good insect eaters, enjoy!
