Cottonwood Disease #202570

Asked July 26, 2014, 10:27 PM EDT

I have several cottonwood trees that have what seems to be a serious disease. There are big green beetles feeding on what looks like a white fungus. This happen in only a couple of weeks. In doing some research I think it is Bacterial Wet Wood. If so is there a remedy? Are they doomed? I have photos I would like to send to you as well.....Linda Johnson

Hello,

You may be on the right track with the diagnosis of Bacterial Wet Wood disease. But, let’s check a few more things:

1)    Does the slime have an odor?

2)    How many of your cottonwoods are affected?

3)    Is this confined to only the cottonwood trees?

4)    How old are the cottonwoods or when were they planted?

5)    You first noticed the damage a few weeks ago?

Thank you
