I had 2 side by side Eng... #200890

Asked July 20, 2014, 11:37 PM EDT

I had 2 side by side English boxwoods X 20 yrs. One died last yr while the other looked healthy. Recently, I noticed the survivor bush looking like the dead bush when it went through it's dying process. It faces NE, gets some shade from the house for a few hrs a day. It has grown beautifully for 20 yrs. Is there any way I can save it? Thank you.

Expert Response

It appears as though there is a root issue. Maybe from voles, compacted soil, water running off the roof directly onto the roots of the plant. LW
Is there anything I can do to try to save this boxwood? Thank you.

At this point look for vole damage (small silver dollar sized holes around the base of the plants), lightly mulch around the base of the shrub to conserve soil moisture, and water during dry periods. Make sure there are no drainage spouts nearby directing water to the root system. Thin the shrub to improve air circulation and light penetration.
