Nasturtium loving small insects #200659

Asked July 19, 2014, 7:36 PM EDT

I have small black insects devouring my nasturtiums, they also like Arugula. They are hard bodied with wings, about the size of aphids but shiny black in color. I will sacrifice the nasturtiums for the sake of the other plants (I mix them in with my vegies) but am worried after they are done with the flowers they'll move on to my food crop. I've tried spraying with dishsoap solution. Did not make an impact - I'm an organic gardener and so am seeking advice that does not involve pesticides. Thanks! Jo

These insects look like they could be flea beetles.  Do they jump when disturbed (flea beetles will)?

Here is some general information about management of flea beetles.   It may be difficult to manage such a high infestation at this point.  You may need to replant the arugula or other affected food crops and use a row cover to protect it.  There are some recommendations for chemical controls in the above fact sheet-always check the label to make sure the pesticide can be used on the plant you want to apply it to.

Good Luck!
