It appears that, by removing the ivy, you uncovered numerous kinds of seeds that needed light in order to sprout and grow.
Thank you for including an image with your inquiry. The flowering plant is foxglove, a naturalized plant that has been in Oregon for so many years that some people think it is a native plant. Foxglove populations are easy to limit if you remove the plants before they set seed. It’s useful to know that these plants are biennials: The first year the plants are a ground-hugging rosette, the second year they bloom.

You take in plant samples; if so, take a good sized sample, or even an entire plant; include flowers whenever possible.
