What kind of insect egg pod is this? #198320

Asked July 10, 2014, 6:18 PM EDT

I found this egg pod thing on the underside of an apple leaf in my yard in E. Boulder.  I'm wondering what will hatch out of it.

Expert Response

It looks like what you have is an egg cluster from the Assassin Bug or Zelus luridus. It is most commonly observed as the egg mass as the adults are more difficult to spot. It is associated with deciduous trees and shrubs and is common along the Front Range. The adults prey on other insects, rather than on vegetation.
