Can you identify whether this is a fungus on my plum tree? #197648

Asked July 08, 2014, 2:45 PM EDT

I have a fungus (I presume) that has taken over a plum tree in my yard. I have attached a picture of it. Can you identify it and let me know how to get rid of it and its effect on the fruit?

Expert Response

It is a little hard to tell from the photo, but many trees in the Prunus spp. are susceptible to black knot fungal infections. Take a look at this publication titled  Black Knot of Prunus and see if this fungus may be the issue. You can also take a piece of the sample to your local Cooperative Extension office for identification.
