Bug Holes In Flower Leaves #194953

Asked June 27, 2014, 7:08 PM EDT

I live in Greenwood Village, Co. I am noticing many holes in the leaves of my plants; clymatis, dahlia, wisteria, putunnias etc. What is the best way to treat?

Thank you for your question and for sending a picture.
Have you had hail in your area? If so, some of this damage looks like hail damage and this can make your plants look like an insect or animal has been feasting on your plants. Additionally it is flea beetle season. Here is a link to a Fact Sheet on flea beetles.

I have recently begun to see Japanese beetles and they can be a nuisance on many of the plants you named. Here is the link to a fact sheet about Japanese beetles.

Another insect that can affect petunias is the tobacco bud worm. Here is a fact sheet regarding this insect.

I would look closely at the plants that are affected and look for any insects and try to identify the insect. If it is hail damage you can remove some of the leaves and let the plants recover and put on new growth. In time they will begin to look better.
The fact sheets will have methods for control and maintenance.  If you have identified an insect/insects that are eating your plants and wish to use a pesticide, please read the label and follow the instructions carefully and as printed on the label.
Good luck and happy gardening.
