i understand that having high grass at the base of the lawn before the lake will keep the geese from coming up on the yard. what flowering plants or ornamental grasses do you recommend?

Oakland County Michigan

Expert Response

It's not so much what we recommend but what ones that you prefer.  Choose native plants that live on lake shores. The term used for this kind of planting is "lakescaping."

Plants like Joe-pye weed, boneset, sneezeweed, native cattails, jewelweed and fireweed are all possibilities.  You need to do an online search for native plant nurseries in southern Michigan.  Also look at lakescaping for more information.

You are creating a buffer zone between the shore and your yard.  It should be about 20 ft. wide for maximum effectiveness.  Leave a path down to the water's edge but consider a gate of some sort to keep the geese from just following the yellow brick road to your yard.
