Can you tell me what type of plant this is? It is growing in a shaded area and is about 4 4feet tall. Looks tropical. No flowers at this point

Eaton County Michigan

Expert Response

The plant is called pokeweed and it is a native.  They get purple berries that the birds love.  The plant is poisonous so it is never troubled by insect or animals. Birds are not bothered by the poisonous berries.  It dies to the ground each year and pops up next spring.

Native Americans used the plant in small doses for medicinal purposes.  The berries are used as dye and ink.
