Puncture vine will only have yellow flowers and has not germinated. It sounds like you have prostrate vervain, which is somewhat related to the ornamental Verbena we plant. Except it is a weed and can reseed in large numbers.
Here's a Fact Sheet from UMass Ameherst: http://extension.umass.edu/landscape/weeds/verbena-bracteata
It grows in the same places that puncture vine does (hot, gravel areas) and control will be the same--if in gravel or rock areas, you can use glyphosate (Roundup), knowing this is a non-selective herbicide. If in mulch, you can pull it or mulch over it. The trick to to kill it prior to flowering so it doesn't form new seeds.

No, thanks for the picture! This is red-stem filaree, a weed related to geraniums. Here's some information on it: http://extension.usu.edu/weedguides/files/uploads/geraniaceae.pdf
