Crab Apple Problem #189938

Asked June 10, 2014, 10:16 AM EDT

Hello.  I have a client who brought in a branch from his crab apple.  The apples are shriveled up, the leaves are lightening in color, curling and they are worried for the health of this tree.  Please advise.

Expert Response

The apples in the picture are last years crab apples. The flowers on the tree are the blooms from the last week. The fruit rot is probably anthracnose on the old fruit and not a worry. I see some leaf feeding but really nothing of concern. The warmer weather over the last few weeks has caused lots of trees to green up as the soil warms. I guess is the tree's leaves are red when they first emerge and then green as they mature. The curled leaves look like young leaves to me. I do not see any apple scab but that would be my main concern as leaves infected by scab will fall off the tree but you are at the end of the apple scab infection season so it is too late to spray.
