Bark peeled from tree by? #188461

Asked June 04, 2014, 9:50 PM EDT

Have 2 fruitless mulberry trees that the bark is being peeled off by something.  Happens during the daytime.  It's occurring very high up in the trees (made the photos with zoom lens,) but the piles of bark are very noticeable on the sidewalks.  Because I'm a walker I've seen it elsewhere in the neighborhood.  One other is fruitless mulberry and 2 are trees I can't identify.  Started about 4 wks ago.  I live in Irving. Talked with local garden center.  Owner didn't know the cause. Help!  What do I do?

Expert Response

This looks to be the result of squirrels chewing on the bark. if the piles on the sidewalk are creating problems for walkers, you might contact the city to see if they could set some traps.

Thank you, Dale Groom.  I was looking for you when I got on a similar website and was told this was a porcupine! Found that hard to believe!  Wade Chambers from the local nursery told me to try to fined a site for you.  Why are the squirrels doing this?  Been here 20 years and this is the first time it's happened. What can I do?
