I have a tree that has yet to produce leaves. (June 4th). It has buds but they are not popping out. There is a split at the bottom of the tree and some branches have their bark stripped of of them. I think it is an Ash tree. I just bought the house this winter, so I am not sure of the past. I have attached a couple of pictures to help in the discription. Was wondering how I know if the emerald Ash Bores might have infested the tree or what it might be.

It could be that your tree just needs a bit more time or that it is dying. The split could be a problem and has possibly been there longer than you know. The bark stripped from the branches could be damage from a squirrel or porcupine. I can't tell from the photo how it looks but it looks like it is beginning to leaf out. As far as Emerald Ash Borers go it is possible but not likely that they have killed your tree. They leave a D shaped exit hole. Here is a link about them and what to look for. Until the tree leafs out it may be difficult to determine what it is. I would give it more time and make sure that it is watered well and you could give it a general tree fertilizer.   http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/insects/find/emerald-ash-borer/
