maple tree leaves turning black #186108

Asked May 28, 2014, 2:08 PM EDT

My 10 year old maple tree is not doing well this year. It's leaves are turning black and withering. It also seems to be experiencing branch die back. What is causing this, and what can I do to help the tree?

Expert Response

If you could send me a photo of the tree trunk and its contact with the ground.  Maples are notorious for having girdling roots which can cause that problem, as well as being planted too deeply.  So, showing the contact of the tree with the ground can show some of those problems.  You can send the photo to my email address.  If you have any questions contact me at the extension office in Henrico at the number below.

You're tree doesn't seem to be planted too deeply although does seem to have a potential for girdling roots.  Is your tree exhibiting die back of limbs, blackening leaves all over?  Or just in a particular area?

The symptoms appear throughout the tree, but not on every leaf nor every branch.

Any way I could do a site visit to see the tree or you could bring a limb showing the transition from healthy to diseased.
