No blossoms on Peach Tree #183396

Asked May 20, 2014, 9:06 AM EDT

We have a Tuscola County resident that came in with a question regarding 5 peach trees he has. They are starting to leaf out but show no signs of blossoming.  What would cause this?  Is he just out of luck for peaches this year?  Is there something he needs to do?   He has a plum tree that is loaded with blossoms as well as apple and pear trees that are full of blossoms.  Just an issue with the peach trees.

Expert Response

Many peach trees in Michigan are without fruit buds due to temperatures in January, February, & March that reached to -15 F or below.  This is likely the cause.  Fruit buds that were killed dropped off as trees started to green up.

Another possibility is that the trees in question did not have much growth last year. Peaches produces fruit on branches that grew last year.  It is hard to tell from the pictures if the trees have much 1 year old wood from last year.  See the following link for pictures of peach buds damaged by winter low temperatures.

Peaches are the most sensitive of tree fruit to winter low temperatures
