My 4' tall hydrangea (ab... #179981

My 4' tall hydrangea (about 10 years old) is still mostly nothing but dry wood right now. A few green leaves are starting to form at the base of the plant. I am wondering if I should cut most of the branches back and let the plant 'start all over'. Your suggestions??

Expert Response

Hydrangeas were hit pretty hard by our cold winter. Scratch the branches with your fingernail and look for green tissue. If you see it, the branch is still viable. Be patient and wait for new growth. Once the plant starts actively growing you will have a better idea of what to prune. Only prune brown dead wood.
